Phone Microphone Not Working? 9 Fixes to Try

If callers say you sound quiet, muffled or silent, the microphone may be blocked, muted for one app, or busy with another app. Most mic problems can be fixed without a repair.

Quick answer

Test the mic with our Mic Test. If it works there, check app permissions and Bluetooth. If it is quiet everywhere, clean the mic hole gently and remove the case.

First, test it

Open the Mic Test, allow microphone access, and speak. If the level bar moves and the 5-second recording sounds clear, your mic hardware works. The problem is in one app, a setting or Bluetooth.

9 fixes

1. Turn off Bluetooth

Calls may be using earbuds or a car system instead of your phone’s mic.

2. Check app permissions

Go to Settings, find the app (WhatsApp, Zoom, Instagram) and make sure Microphone is allowed.

3. Close other apps

Only one app can use the mic at a time on some phones. Close voice recorders, games and call apps running in the background.

4. Remove the case and screen protector

A case can cover the mic hole, often on the bottom edge or near the camera.

5. Clean the mic holes gently

Brush the tiny holes with a soft, dry toothbrush. Never push pins or needles into them; the mic membrane is very thin.

6. Let it dry

Water in the mic makes voices sound muffled. Unlike speakers, mics can’t push water out with sound, so give the phone several hours of air drying. Our water damage guide has the full steps.

7. Restart the phone

A restart clears audio services that got stuck.

8. Turn off noise reduction tricks

Some phones have voice isolation or noise reduction modes for calls. Try switching them off and on to see which sounds better.

9. Update or reset settings

Install system updates. As a last step, reset all settings (not your data) to clear a bad configuration.

Which mic is the problem?

Most phones have two or three mics: bottom for calls, top for noise cancelling, and back for video. If calls are fine but videos are quiet, the rear mic is the likely culprit. Record a video and a voice note to compare.

When to get it repaired

If the Mic Test shows no movement at all after cleaning, drying and restarting, the mic or its connector may be damaged. A repair shop can usually replace it.
