Laptop speakers are small and tucked under the keyboard or at the bottom of the case, so they pick up dust and are easy to misconfigure. Before you think about repair, go through these steps.
1. Check the output device
Windows: click the speaker icon in the taskbar and choose your laptop speakers, not a monitor, HDMI TV or Bluetooth device. Mac: System Settings → Sound → Output → MacBook Speakers.
2. Unplug headphones and turn off Bluetooth
A connected headset or a Bluetooth speaker in the next room may be getting the sound.
3. Run the built-in troubleshooter (Windows)
Settings → System → Sound → Troubleshoot common sound problems. It resets many audio issues automatically.
4. Update or reinstall the audio driver (Windows)
Device Manager → Sound, video and game controllers → right-click your audio device → Update driver. If that fails, uninstall it and restart; Windows reinstalls it.
5. Turn off audio enhancements
Crackling and distortion are often caused by “enhancements” or third-party sound software. Windows: Sound settings → your speaker → turn off Audio enhancements. Then test again.
6. Reset the sound system (Mac)
Open Activity Monitor, search for coreaudiod and quit it. macOS restarts it at once and many crackling issues disappear.
7. Clean the speaker grille
Turn off the laptop. Brush the grilles with a soft, dry brush, holding the laptop so dust falls out. Then play our Dust Cleaner tone at medium volume to shake out loose particles.
8. Test each speaker and the bass
Use the Left & Right Speaker Test to make sure both speakers work. Play a sweep with the Frequency Range Test: if one frequency makes a buzz or rattle, something is loose near the speaker.
9. Check for water damage
If you spilled a drink, turn the laptop off, unplug it, turn it upside down in a tent shape and let it dry for at least 48 hours. Sugary drinks need professional cleaning.

Common questions
Why do my laptop speakers sound tinny?
Small speakers cannot play deep bass. Turn on the maker’s sound app (Dolby, Realtek, B&O) or use headphones for fuller sound.
Can I make my laptop louder?
Clean the grilles first. For quiet recordings, use the Volume Booster.
