How to Clean Your Phone Charging Port Safely (Lint and Dust)

If your charger keeps falling out, only works at an angle, or the phone charges slowly, the port is probably packed with pocket lint. Every time you plug in, the cable presses the lint deeper until the connector cannot seat properly.

Signs your port needs cleaning

  • The cable does not click in firmly
  • Charging stops when you move the phone
  • “Accessory not supported” or moisture warnings appear when the port is dry
  • Wired headphones or USB-C accessories cut out

What you need

ToolWhy
FlashlightTo see inside the port
Wooden or plastic toothpickSoft enough not to scratch contacts
Soft, dry toothbrushBrushes out loose dust
Bulb air blowerPuffs dust out without moisture

Step by step

1. Turn the phone off

This protects the contacts while you work.

2. Look inside

Use the flashlight. Lint usually sits as a flat, grey layer at the very back.

3. Loosen and lift the lint

Slide the toothpick gently along the back wall and the sides, then lift and pull lint toward you. On USB-C, avoid the center tongue with the contacts; work around it.

4. Brush and blow

Brush the opening and use a bulb blower to clear what is left. Avoid canned air held close; the cold propellant can leave moisture.

5. Test

Plug in the cable. It should click firmly and charge without wiggling.

What not to do

  • No metal pins, needles or paper clips: they can short or bend contacts
  • No liquid cleaners or alcohol poured into the port
  • No blowing with your mouth: it adds moisture

Wet port instead of dusty?

Do not charge by cable. Tap the phone with the port facing down and let it dry. See our guide on water in the charging port and how to dry a phone without rice.

Clean the speaker grille too

The bottom speaker sits right next to the port and collects the same lint. Brush it gently and run the Dust Cleaner to bring back clear sound.

Common questions

How often should I clean the port?

Every few months, or whenever the cable feels loose.

The port is clean but still not charging.

Try another cable and charger. If it still fails, the port may be damaged and needs a repair shop.
