Portable speakers go to the beach, the pool and the kitchen, so they collect sand, dust, sunscreen and sticky fingerprints. Dirt in the grille softens the sound. Here is how to clean any Bluetooth speaker without damage.
What you need
| Item | Use |
|---|---|
| Soft, dry toothbrush | Grilles and fabric |
| Lint roller or tape | Dust and hair on fabric |
| Microfiber cloth | Rubber and plastic |
| Mild soap and water | Sticky marks |
| Wooden toothpick | Around buttons and ports |
Step by step
1. Turn it off and close the ports
Unplug it and close any port covers.
2. Remove loose dust
Brush fabric and metal grilles gently from top to bottom. A lint roller lifts hair and fine dust from fabric.
3. Clean rubber and plastic
Wipe with a cloth dampened with mild soapy water, then a clean damp cloth. Dry well.
4. Clean around buttons
Run a dry toothpick along the edges of buttons and seams.
5. Rinse waterproof models (only if allowed)
Speakers rated IPX7 or IP67 can usually be rinsed in fresh water, especially after sand or salt water. Check your manual. Close all port covers first, then let it dry completely before charging.
6. Clear water and dust with sound
Lay the speaker on its back or hold it grille-down, connect your phone and run the Water Eject or Dust Cleaner tone at medium volume.
7. Test it
Play the Left & Right Speaker Test and the Bass Test to make sure everything sounds clear.
What to avoid
- Alcohol or strong cleaners on fabric
- Hair dryers or heaters to speed up drying
- Charging while the port is wet
- Pressure washers or strong jets of water
Common questions
Why does my speaker sound muffled after the beach?
Sand and salt sit in the grille. Rinse it if it is waterproof, dry it, then run the Dust Cleaner.
My speaker crackles after cleaning.
Let it dry for a few hours. If it still crackles, read how to fix a Bluetooth speaker.
