Ringing, buzzing or a muffled feeling after a concert, a club or loud headphones is very common. It is a warning sign that your ears were exposed to more sound than they can handle.
This guide is general information, not medical advice. If you are worried about your hearing, see a doctor or audiologist.
Why it happens
Loud sound overworks the tiny hair cells in the inner ear. They become temporarily less sensitive, and the brain fills the gap with a ringing or hissing sound. This is often called a temporary threshold shift.
How long does it last?
For most people the ringing and muffled feeling fade within a few hours to a day or two. Repeated exposure can make the damage permanent, so each episode counts.
What helps
- Give your ears quiet time. Avoid loud music, headphones and noisy places for at least a day.
- Do not cover the ringing with more loud sound. If quiet is hard, soft background sound at a low level is fine.
- Rest and stay hydrated, and avoid extra noise like power tools.
When to see a doctor
Get medical advice promptly if:
- The ringing or muffled hearing lasts more than a day or two
- You have sudden hearing loss in one ear
- You feel dizzy, have ear pain or fluid from the ear
Sudden hearing loss is treated as urgent. Early treatment can make a big difference, so do not wait to see if it goes away.
How to prevent it
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Concerts and clubs | Wear musician earplugs; they lower volume without muffling music |
| Headphones | Follow the 60/60 rule; see safe headphone volume |
| Loud venues | Take breaks in a quieter area every hour |
| Not sure how loud it is | Check with our Sound Meter |
Check your hearing over time
Our Hearing Age Test is a quick home check of high-frequency hearing. It is not a medical test, but a big change between results is a good reason to book a hearing test.

Can tones or apps cure tinnitus?
